Olive the Owl had the biggest ears in the whole forest and, most nights, the most to say. She loved telling stories about the shapes of clouds, the taste of the first spring beetle, and exactly why Tuesdays were her favourite.
Her best friend Fig the Mouse loved listening to Olive's stories. But lately, whenever Fig tried to say something back, Olive was already halfway into her next tale, and Fig's little words got swept away like leaves in the wind.
One evening, Fig climbed up to their usual branch looking smaller than usual, tail curled tight around her paws. "Olive," she started, "I need to tell you something โ"
"Oh, that reminds me!" Olive interrupted, feathers puffing with excitement. "Did I ever tell you about the time I flew all the way to the old oak and back in one breath?"
Fig opened her mouth, closed it again, and simply nodded, the way she always did. She waited for a gap in Olive's story that never quite came, and eventually she climbed down the branch and went quietly home.
Olive kept talking to the empty space beside her for a full minute before she noticed Fig was gone. She blinked. The forest suddenly felt very quiet, and not in the nice way.
The next night, Olive found Fig by the stream and sat down beside her without saying a single word โ which, for Olive, took real effort. "I want to hear what you were going to tell me," she said softly. "All of it. I'll just listen this time."
Fig looked up, surprised. Slowly, in a small voice, she told Olive that her family was moving to the meadow next season, and she'd been trying to say goodbye for three whole days.
Olive felt her heart squeeze tight. She almost hadn't heard the most important thing her best friend had ever tried to tell her.
They sat together until the stars came out, and this time, Olive used her big ears exactly the way they were meant to be used.
Flying home that night, Olive decided that stories were lovely โ but listening, really listening, was how you found out what actually mattered to the people you loved.
