Down at Pebble Beach, Marina the Crab had been building her sandcastle all afternoon โ three towers, a shell-lined moat, and a tiny driftwood flag on top. It was, without question, her best one yet.
Shelly the Turtle came barrelling down the dune, so excited about the sunset that she didn't see the castle until her shell was already crashing straight through the middle tower. Sand sprayed everywhere. The flag toppled.
"Sorry!" Shelly called over her shoulder, already halfway to the water to watch the colours change.
But something about that quick little "sorry" sat strangely in her stomach, like a shell she'd swallowed sideways. She turned around. Marina was standing very still, looking at her flattened tower, not saying anything at all.
Shelly walked back slowly. "I really am sorry, Marina. I wasn't looking, and I ruined something you worked really hard on. That must feel awful."
Marina's claws unclenched, just a little. "It took me all afternoon," she said quietly.
"I know," said Shelly. "Will you let me help you build it again? I'll go slower this time. I promise."
Marina looked up, surprised. Somehow this second sorry โ the one with actual words in it, the one that noticed how she felt โ landed completely differently than the first one had.
Together they rebuilt the tower, patted the moat back into shape, and planted the little driftwood flag even straighter than before. Shelly carried buckets of water with careful, slow turtle steps the whole time.
As the sun dipped orange into the sea, Marina looked at their castle and then at Shelly. "Thanks for coming back," she said.
Shelly smiled, sand still on her shell. She'd learned something that evening, tucked away next to the setting sun: a real sorry isn't just a word you say quickly and forget. It's something you *show* โ with time, with care, and with coming back to make things right.
