Every evening, Huckle the Hedgehog took the same path home past Mrs. Marigold Mouse's cottage, and every evening, he noticed the same thing: her acorn basket was always a little too full, and her steps were always a little too slow.

Tonight, halfway up her garden path, the basket tipped, and acorns rolled everywhere โ€” down the steps, into the flowerbeds, one even bouncing off Mrs. Marigold's hat.

Huckle didn't wait to be asked. He waddled over as fast as his little legs could carry him and started scooping acorns into his curled-up back, the way hedgehogs do best.

"Oh, Huckle, you didn't have to โ€”" Mrs. Marigold began, straightening her hat.

"I know," said Huckle, grinning as three more acorns rolled onto his spines. "But I saw you needed a hand, so I figured I'd just start."

Together they gathered every last acorn, and Huckle carried the basket the rest of the way up the path, humming as he went.

Mrs. Marigold set the basket down with a happy sigh. "You know, most folks wait until you ask before they lend a paw."

Huckle thought about that. "Waiting to be asked always seemed backwards to me. If I can see someone needs help, why would I make them ask for it first?"

Mrs. Marigold smiled the warmest smile, the kind that reached all the way to her whiskers. "That's a rare kind of kind, little one."

Huckle rolled home that night feeling warm all over โ€” warmer, even, than after a big bowl of berry stew. He'd learned that the best kind of helping wasn't about being the biggest or the strongest. It was simply about noticing first, and moving before anyone had to ask.
