A new creature arrived in Silverdew Meadow on a quiet, misty morning โ a small, spiky little animal none of the others had ever seen before, standing alone at the edge of the clover field.
The other meadow animals peeked out from behind buttercups and whispered among themselves. "What is it?" "Is it friendly?" "Maybe it wants to be left alone." Nobody moved any closer, and the little creature stood very still, looking very much like it wished it could disappear into the grass.
Stella the Unicorn watched from the hill above, her heart doing a nervous little flutter. She didn't know what to say either. But she remembered the first day she'd trotted into a new meadow, feeling exactly that small and that unsure.
She took a breath, and instead of waiting for someone else to be brave first, she walked right down the hill herself.
"Hello," Stella said, stopping a polite distance away. "I'm Stella. I don't think we've met โ what's your name?"
The little creature blinked, surprised that anyone had asked. "I'm Quill," they said quietly. "I just moved here. I didn't know anyone yet."
"Well, now you know me," said Stella, smiling. "Would you like to see where the sweetest clover grows? I always share the good patch."
Quill's spikes softened, just slightly, and something like relief crossed their face. "I'd like that very much."
As they walked together, the other meadow animals began to creep closer, one by one, now that Stella had shown them there was nothing to be unsure about at all. By sundown, Quill was laughing at Bramble's jokes and racing Fennel across the clover field like they'd always belonged there.
That night, as the meadow settled into starlight, Stella thought about how small a thing "hello" really was โ just one word โ and how much it had been worth saying first.
"Being new is the hardest part," she whispered to herself, drifting toward sleep. "But it only takes one friend saying hello to make it feel like home."
