The Magic Word

Please & Thank You 2โ€“5 yrs With Pip the Rabbit

Deep behind the blackberry bushes, where the light turned soft and green, Pip the Rabbit found a gate she had never seen before. It was small and wooden, wrapped in sleeping vines, with a golden latch shaped like a little bell.

Pip pushed. Nothing happened. She pulled. Still nothing. She banged on the gate with both paws and huffed, "Open! I want in!" The gate did not move one inch.

A soft voice hummed from somewhere in the vines. "This garden only opens for those who remember their manners, little rabbit." Pip looked left. She looked right. She saw no one at all โ€” only the golden latch, glinting like it was listening.

"Oh," said Pip, feeling her ears go a little warm. She tried again, softer this time. "Please may I come in?"

The latch gave a small, silvery chime, and the gate swung open on its own, slow and creaking and kind.

Inside was the most beautiful garden Pip had ever seen โ€” flowers in every colour, humming with fireflies even though it wasn't quite dark yet. She wandered from bloom to bloom, and every time she cupped one gently and whispered "thank you," its petals opened wider, brighter, as if the flower itself was smiling.

Near the very back, Pip found one small, closed bud, greyish and drooping. She knelt beside it and said the softest thank you she had all evening. Slowly, so slowly, it unfurled into the most brilliant gold, like a tiny sun tucked in the leaves.

By the time the moon rose properly, Pip's basket was full of petals, and her heart was full of something warmer than that. She said goodnight to the garden the way she'd greeted it โ€” "Thank you for having me" โ€” and the gate chimed softly shut behind her.

Hopping home under the stars, Pip realised something: the words hadn't unlocked a garden at all. They had unlocked the *best* parts of it โ€” the parts that only bloom when someone remembers to be kind.

And that night, tucked into her burrow with petals still tucked behind one ear, Pip drifted off dreaming of golden gates, humming softly to herself: please, and thank you, please, and thank you โ€” the two smallest, most magic words she knew.
